From humble beginnings three years ago, the online nursery furniture, baby bedding and baby gifts retailer 4little1s.com was started. From a blank piece of paper around a kitchen table in Surrey and a glass of wine to a profitable company turning over £120,000 ……..not bad for a 'stay at home mum' says Christianne James, founder of the company. Not only that, her plans are to keep going and expand over the next twelve months as we come out of the recession.

I used to work in City for a major International Bank, it was a great job however I always felt there needed to be a work / life balance in place, of which the bank job didn't really offer. It was very one sided, and lets just say, it wasn't on the life side !

Deep down I had always had a keen interest in business and new one day I would set something up. It was reading Richard Branson's autobiography that finally inspired me in that sometimes you just need to give it a go and go for it. You can read, plan, run through spreadsheets, talk with people, look at statistics and so on……but sometimes you just need to get on with it and do it. To be fair, starting a business just as the world was entering into financial chaos did raise a couple of eyebrows around the table, but I had covered the downsides and felt confident the idea would work.

Becoming pregnant, I decided to take a look online as to what I could purchase without the need to go along the high street on a wet Saturday afternoon. It soon became apparent it was not as straight forward as I had thought….that's when I had the light bulb moment of there has to be another way.

Most important things I have learnt

" Its sounds a little corny, but believe and have confidence you can do it !

" You cannot do everything - Get other people to help you, there are experts that can do something in hours which would take you days !

" Create a trusted team around you - Accountant, Website designers, delivery companies, PR, Marketing people etc

" Get a mentor - Someone you can bounce ideas off, or for them to 'tell you how it really is' can be very valuable indeed

" Learn from your mistakes - Don't be afraid of making them, learn, fine tune and move on. If a particular campaign or other piece of marketing didn't work, learn from it and try another tack


Top 10 things I would recommend other mums to do when starting their own businesses

" Get buy in from your family

" Listen to other people

" Create a business plan / roadmap - it helps focus your mind and gives you a framework to work towards
" Set yourself some realistic objectives that you can aim towards

My husband had been working in the City for a number of years in IT and had the technical knowledge, I had spotted a gap in the market for a quality online nursery retail and the rest was history as they say

If only it was that easy, it has been very hard work, long hours and initially was more stressful than the job I had since left. I was fortunate that my husband had invested into the company so at least I didn't have the worry about a bank chasing me for repayments of a loan.

Having confidence in your idea, not afraid of hard work or long hours and just having the stubborn belief it that you will make it happen have all been contributing factors in making the business grow and where it is today.

One of the most important factors looking back, has been having a supportive family who understand the business and are happy to help out during the peak seasons. Having family and people close to you to tell you objectively on any matters whatsoever is worth its weight in gold.

When the snow comes….

Winter Family Ideas

If you are like me, the thought of it getting darker earlier and dark in the morning when the alarm clock goes off in the morning, doesn’t fill me with joy. Well getting outdoors and doing an outdoor activity with the children is an excellent way to flush out those Winter blues. If you as a parent get involved in an outdoor activity, it is more likely that your child will also become more physically active as they grow up.

Just because you are all responsible now, mortgage, credit card (s) and all grown up, doesn’t mean you cannot still get out there and have some snow fun.

Well here are a few ideas, how about:

Hide and Seek – Try hiding something, anything, anything at all and let the kids try to find it in the garden. The great thing about snow is that something could be right in front of you but with snow over it, it’s invisible!

Become a tracker – When it snows you get to see all the tracks of the animals in your garden. See if you can work out what it was, a squirrel, a cat etc.

Play ball – You don’t have to wait for the sun to shine to play ball. In the snow it’s better; the ball doesn’t bounce quite so far if you miss the catch. Have a game of football and you really are in for a treat, make sure the ball doesn’t turn into a snowball. Finally – not a ball game, but ever tried Frisbee in the snow ?

• Sledging – Remember as a kid the sheer excitement of sledging down a hill, hat and mitts on and a very cold face, so cold your nose was red ! It was great fun, so when it snows, get out there and have some fun.

Roll snow – Make a snowman, see how big you can make him / her or challenge the kids to see who can make the best one.

There are plenty of old wives tales that have been passed down along the years, doing the rounds about how to tell if your baby is going to be a boy or a girl. Here a few of them, but do be aware these are old wives tales and not medical fact. I am just listing them for fun !

· If baby has a heart rate of less than 140 beats per minute this means a boy, if it’s over 140 beats per minute it’s a girl.

· The bump is high then it’s a girl…..low and it’s a boy.

· Morning sickness = girl.

· Active baby in there = boy.

· Sweets craving = girl, salt craving = boy.

· Wedding ring or needle suspended over your belly moves circular pattern = girl. Back and forth = boy

Pregnant and Trying to Sleep

Having a baby if nothing else will have a major impact on your sleep (?) patterns. Getting sleep with a little baby in the house is hard and sleep becomes a valuable asset to seek out. But even before that, getting sleep while pregnant is also not an easy task to achieve.

You are not alone in this, most pregnant mums experience the difficulty of being able to have a really good night’s sleep.

As your little one grows inside you, the levels of Estrogen, Prolactin, and Progesterone start to cause havoc with your body and being able to get a solid night’s sleep.

Sore Breast is another common cause for a disruptive night’s sleep followed by visiting the bathroom more often than before. You can thank Progesterone for that !

Let’s not forget Nausea / vomiting of course

Fortunately, this is only a phase and once you reach the 2nd trimester things get a little better – at least for the night visits to the bathroom that is ! Snoring sometime occurs of which you can thank Estrogen levels swelling your nasal passages !

Unfortunately the 3^rd trimester isn’t the ‘best’

· Heartburn,

· Increased need to urinate

· Sinus congestion

· Cramps in your legs

…………………. and just the impossible task of trying to find a comfy position to sleep in, will all fight against you to get a good night’s sleep.

Well all of this doesn’t sound too good, so what can you do ! Well from my own experience I have found the following helpful.

• Have a regular planned bedtime
• Try not to nap during the day
• Exercise
• Cut back on the coffee and tea (you should really cut back totally!)
• Bath
• Soft music
• Read

I think I may be pregnant…how do I know?

There are lots of women who just don't know they are actually pregnant until they have missed a period. However, there could be other clues before that to help you out.

Ø  Do you experience sickness ?

Ø  Do you experience nausea ?

Ø  Can you taste a metal type of taste in your mouth  ?

If I think I am pregnant, when do I do a pregnancy test to check ?

The home pregnancy test you can buy in the supermarket and pharmacies generally can be used on the first day of your missed period. There are other tests available that are really sensitive and you are able to use them sooner than this date.

Ok so what is the science behind them ?

It all revolves around detecting the presence of a hormone in your urine. The hormone is called Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin or hCG for short !. Basically when the pregnancy test stick comes in contact with this hormone from your urine, it changes colour.

So how accurate are pregnancy kits then ?

Pregnancy tests are accurate as long as you use them correctly. However it is possible to have something called a false negative. That is, the stick says you are pregnant but you are in fact not. It’ is better to repeat the pregnancy test and also check with your doctor.

When will my little one be due?

How long your pregnancy will be will depend on when the first day of your last period was, even though you actually conceived before that (This does depend on the length of your cycle of course!). The date would be two weeks either side of the due date.

There are some great online tools called pregnancy calculators that can help you work out the date, but you should not rely on these tools 100%. Just type in ‘Pregnancy calendar’ or ‘Pregnancy calculator’ in Google or Yahoo, Bing etc and you will find loads of them. You should always consult your doctor rather than relying on online tools.

The pregnancy test says I’m pregnant, does my doctor need to confirm my pregnancy?

If you have been out and bought the home testing kit used it and it’s a positive, you should tell your doctor. Usually they will offer you something called a 'dating' scan. Basically an ultrasound scan is done early on during your pregnancy to discover your uterus size and embryo. This is all done to help provide a more accurate picture of how many weeks you are pregnant.
