Mamma Mia

Mamma Mia – a great good news story in the newspaper today for a change….little Layla Towsey fell into a 5 day Coma after contracting Meningitis and awoke singing the Abba classic song, Mamma Mia.

Layla developed a rash on her leg and started being sick and a very high temperature. She was taken to Hospital and they though it was probably just a heat rash ! She then had a heart attack and transferred to another hospital in West London and put onto a life support machine. After five days of being unconscious she woke singing the words of Mamma Mia.

This is a great good news story and our good wishes go to family and Layla.

Baby Bedding

BABY BEDDING

When you choose baby bedding for your baby the one which can guarantee optimum baby bedding safety and coziness to your baby is your only option and the best fabric for is 100 percent cotton.Following are descriptions of the different types of baby bedding available for each type of baby furniture.-

Crib Bedding. For the first year of the baby's life, the crib is its ideal bed. Cribs are available many different types and they all need to be durable and strong. You can choose the standard crib or go for a more expensive crib such as a convertible / portable crib which is ideal for traveling. It is best to choose the crib from a reputable company and the one you decide on must have no protruding pieces that the baby could knock against and hurt itself.

All screws and bolts etc need to be securly fastened and you should check these often.- Bassinet Bedding. These are suitable for the baby for the first 3 or 4 months only. A perfect bassinet will have a soft mattress and a blanket. It should be made of a soft material with ideally the color blending with the baby room colors, design and decor.-

Cradles have a gentle rocking motion which ensures that your baby sleeps soundly. Light colored cradles are preferred by parents because they not only look attractive but you can notice when they get wet.- Baby blankets. Blankets should be of a soft material and of course must be non-toxic. Today there are many types of blankets to choose from that are soft, smooth and pleasant smelling with attractive and eye pleasing colors.Bedding for the baby could differ depending on whether it is a boy or a girl, or alternatively it could be gender neutral as well.

The color combination and cute looking cartoons are common to both the baby boys and baby girls. For the girls, the baby bedding is often in shades of pink, light blue and purples, and a baby girl's bed is laid out fit for a princess. A baby boy's bed is sometimes sport oriented, themed around super sport heroes, wrestling personalities or football and baseball stars. The colors tend to be darker and bolder for boys, often blue but also reds and intermingled with dark blue or black. There is no hard and fast rule for baby bedding.

You will see a lot of neutral nursery bedding themes with cartoons such as Disney and Popeye characters or cute animations. The baby in its first few years is too small to understand the difference about having gender specific cartoons and animals and they are attracted to anything which is coloful; if it is pleasing to your eyes and makes you smile, it will do the same for your baby.

When they get a little older, little boys would feel a little awkward having his bed done in pinks and pastels! When baby girls grow older, their bedroom could have blinds with the curtains hanging on rods above.

This gives the bed somewhat a princess bed appearance - afterall, that baby girls of yours is a princess, isn't she!

Baby Bedding is one interesting aspect where there are a lot of options for the parent - choosing the kinds and textures of sheets and the choices of colors and baby bedding patterns. It is up to you if you choose gender neutral baby bedding or something which would make your baby girl feel like a princess or your baby boy feel like a superhero!

Ten Signs Your Pregnant

Top 10 signs of pregnancy

If you're extremely tuned in to your body's rhythms, you may begin to suspect you're pregnant soon after conception. But most women won't experience any early pregnancy symptoms until the fertilised egg attaches itself to the uterine wall, several days after conception. Others may notice no signs of pregnancy for weeks and begin to wonder "Am I pregnant?" only when they miss a period. Below is a list of some of the first signs of impending motherhood. You may experience all, some, or none of these symptoms of pregnancy:

1. Food cravings. Yes, it's a cliché, but cravings sometimes can be a sign of pregnancy. Don't rely on them as a sure symptom (it may be all in your head, or even a sign that your body is low on a particular nutrient), but if cravings are accompanied by some of the other symptoms on this list, start counting the days from your last period.

2. Darkening of your areolas. If the skin around your nipples gets darker, you may have successfully conceived, though this may also signal a hormonal imbalance unrelated to pregnancy or be a leftover effect from a previous pregnancy.

3. Implantation bleeding or cramping.

3. About eight days after ovulation, you may experience implantation spotting, a slight staining of a pink or brown colour, as well as some cramping. This is caused by the egg burrowing into the endometrial lining. You might also see some spotting around the time you expect your period.

4. Frequent urination. Once the embryo implants and begins producing the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), you may find yourself visitng the loo.

5. Fatigue. Feeling tired? No, make that exhausted. High levels of the hormone progesterone can make you feel as if you've run a marathon when all you've done is put in a day at the office. Tiredness is a hallmark of early pregnancy, though probably not a surefire symptom on its own.

6. Tender, swollen breasts. If you're pregnant, your breasts will probably become increasingly tender to the touch, similar to the way they feel before your period, only more so. Once your body grows accustomed to the hormone surge, the pain will subside.

7. Altered sense of taste. You may notice that your sense of taste changes. Some women say they have a metallic taste in their mouth, others that they cannot stand the taste of coffee, tea, or a food they usually like.

8. Morning sickness. If you're lucky, morning sickness won't hit you until a few weeks after conception. (A lucky few escape it altogether.) But as early as a couple of days following conception, you may begin feeling nauseated and queasy. And not just in the morning, either -- pregnancy-related nausea can be a problem morning, noon, or night.

9. A missed period. If you're usually pretty regular and your period is late, it's worth trying a test. A missed period is the surest sign of pregnancy in a woman of childbearing age who usually has regular periods. And finally...

10. A positive home pregnancy test. If you've waited to test until at least the first day of a missed period and a blue line appears in the test window, you're most likely to be in the family way. Make an appointment with your doctor to confirm the good news.

Baby News

BABY NEWS

British television presenter Tess Daly, 38, was snapped at the Disney Store VIP Shopping Party in London on April 30th.)

Tess and her husband are expecting their second child in June. They are already parents to daughter Phoebe Elizabeth, 4.

Tess has shared that she is hoping to have a natural birth.
“Having had a caesarean last time and not having gone through the whole process of labour, this time I’ve opted to do it naturally,” she is quoted as telling Now magazine.

“So, though pretty petrified by the prospect of the unknown, if billions of women have done it before me I’d like to think I can give it a go,” she continued.

The former model confirmed she was pregnant in December, saying: “We are over the moon at the prospect of a new addition to our family. We’re very much looking forward to having a brother or a sister for Phoebe to play with.”
Tess admitted her daughter had been begging for a sibling, but recently changed her mind and would prefer a cat.

She said: “I’m happy about another baby. Phoebe used to ask us for a brother or sister, but recently she’s started asking us for a cat.”
“Being a working mum is hard for any woman, but I make sure I’m there to tuck her in at night whenever I can,” said Tess.

Swine Flu

Swine flu: what parents need to know

The news of the swine flu is spreading faster than the influenza virus itself, and this is very unsettling for many parents. The reports of 50 cases in the United States and 152 deaths in Mexico might lead some parents to panic, since babies and small children are often the most vulnerable during a serious flu outbreak. But according to Dr. Jay Tureen, pediatrician and infectious disease specialist at UCSF Children's Hospital, "Parent's shouldn't panic. They should be aware and concerned, but not panicked."

Here are Tureen's answers to additional questions parents might have about swine flu:
What exactly is swine flu? It has been identified as a type A influenza that has taken pieces of influenza viruses from pigs, birds, and humans and combined them into a new virus. These sorts of viruses often evolve into a pandemic. It has the potential to spread widely because humans haven't been exposed to it before and they haven't developed any resistance. But at this point we don't know if this particular virus will spread widely and if it does we don't know how severe it will be. We're still in the early stages of the virus.

But the reports from Mexico sound quite severe? Yes, the reports from Mexico indicate that this flu is associated with a higher mortality rate than usual. But we really shouldn't be too concerned at this point because it's entirely possible that the death rate in Mexico is higher due to incomplete reporting. And the cases in the United States have been very mild. Nobody has died.
What are the symptoms? If your child has influenza-like symptoms--including fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea--you should contact their doctor. Your doctor can give your child a test to determine if he has a type A influenza. If that's the case then they can have a public health official determine if it's swine flu. Also, if your child or anyone in your family has the flu, they should stay at home and avoid exposing others. Right now we don't want to be spreading any flu around.

Should my children be washing their hands more than usual? Yes, this is the best way to prevent the spread of a flu virus.
If my child didn't get a flu shot this year, should I take her in for one at the last-minute? No. This year's flu shot doesn't offer protection against this virus.
Can I feed my child pork? Absolutely. You don't catch the virus by eating swine. It's spread by human-to-human contact only.

If I'm planning a family vacation to Mexico in the near future, should I cancel my plans? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site is your best resource for travel advisories and updates on the swine flu situation.

If my child contracts the virus can she be treated? This particular virus can be treated with antiviral drugs. You can also take medication prophylatically, so if one child contracts it others in the family can take drugs so they won't catch the flu.

Famous Baby info

Olympian Kerri Walsh, Athlete, who announced in December that she was expecting, says that this pregnancy is extra special to her. “We had been wanting to have kids for a long time and tried to get pregnant before Beijing but had a miscarriage,” she admits. “It was sad, but the way it happened I had to wait at least a year before trying again. Then we got pregnant literally first try, day one in Beijing after we finished. Beijing baby. It was an inspired conception!”

While Walsh, 30, and Jennings, 33, had initially wanted to keep the baby’s gender a secret, they decided to find out Christmas morning with their families.

“I filled out this letter to Casey saying ‘Merry Christmas. We have a beautiful baby —- on the way’ and I had the doctor fill it out. So neither of us knew at that time. My mom got the letter framed and we opened it on Christmas and found out together. It was the last present we opened and the best. I was so overwhelmed, everyone freaked out.”

So will there be more future Olympians on the way for the dynamic duo?

“Absolutely,” says Walsh. “We want at least three kids. I want my boys and a girl, I want it all! But I want to keep working because I love my job so much. I just need to learn how to be a good juggler and we’ll get it all done.”

Four Year Olds

Four Year Olds who are not ready for school

Parents who believe their children are too young to start school at the age of four will be able to keep them in nursery classes for a year. This is according to a big recent reform of the primary education system. The move will ‘benefit’ children born in the summer who are generally young for their year’ and often do less well as a result.
